A good electric toothbrush gift gets used twice a day for years; a poor one ends up in a drawer. As practising dentists, we look for presents that make brushing easier to do well, and everything below is something we sell and would happily wrap ourselves. All prices are Onyx prices, checked on 30 September 2026.

The gift that needs nothing else: the Complete Care Bundle

If we could give only one present this year, it would be a Complete Care Bundle, because it is the gift that needs nothing else: the Oral-B iO9 Black Onyx, a four-pack of genuine iO Ultimate Clean heads and a Biorepair Plus toothpaste, all in one order. The brush, a year of fresh heads and the first tube are sorted, and nobody has to work out which heads fit on Boxing Day.

It is £180. Bought separately at Onyx the three come to £191.98, so the bundle saves £11.98, and delivery is free. Choose the toothpaste to suit them: Total Protection for everyday care, or Sensitive Teeth if cold drinks make them wince. Both are fluoride-free and built on microRepair®, Biorepair's zinc hydroxyapatite. Oral-B recommends a new head every three months, so the four heads cover roughly a year for one person.

The person who has everything: Oral-B iO9 Black Onyx

For someone who already owns the gadgets, the Oral-B iO9 Black Onyx is the brush we would wrap. It is the one our dentists chose to sell, and our iO9 review explains why.

It works as a present because it is useful from the first morning. A ring of light shows when pressure is too hard, too soft or just right; a colour display counts the two minutes and says when to change the head; and there are seven modes, including Sensitive, Gum Care and Tongue Clean. The Oral-B app adds coverage tracking for anyone who likes the data, and Oral-B even calls this pack a gift edition. At £164.99 it is a long way below Oral-B's £500 list price.

What is in the box

Oral-B lists the handle, one brush head, a charging travel case, a magnetic charger and a hygienic brush-head holder. A full charge takes about three hours, so it can go on charge on Christmas morning and be ready by the evening.

Stocking fillers under £25

iO Ultimate Clean heads, four-pack: £20

For anyone who already owns an Oral-B iO brush, a four-pack of genuine black Ultimate Clean heads is a present that gets used all year. Check that their handle says iO: Oral-B's Genius, Smart, Vitality and Pro brushes take different heads. Our iO heads guide explains the difference.

Biorepair Plus toothpaste: £6.99

Our Biorepair Plus toothpastes are built on microRepair® hydroxyapatite, the mineral tooth enamel is mostly made of. A tube is a thoughtful extra for anyone who cares what goes into their toothpaste, and our hydroxyapatite guide explains why we rate it.

A practical note: stocking fillers on their own come to less than £50, so UK delivery is £4.99. Put them in the same order as a brush or bundle and they travel free.

The relative with sensitive teeth

The Oral Health Foundation lists brushing too hard among the causes of sensitivity, and the iO9's pressure light shows when to ease off, while its Sensitive mode gives a gentler clean. For toothpaste, Biorepair Plus Sensitive Teeth has the higher dose of the two: 24% microRepair® against 20% in Total Protection, according to Biorepair. In a 2023 meta-analysis of 44 trials, hydroxyapatite reduced tooth sensitivity significantly more than placebo. Put the two together and it is a gift that says you listened.

One kindness: if the sensitivity is new, severe or in one tooth, the Oral Health Foundation advises seeing a dentist, so pop a reminder in the card.

Two gifts we would not give

Novelty “whole-mouth” brushes. In a small 2020 trial of 22 dental students, the U-shaped automatic brush tested removed no more plaque than not brushing at all. Not what you want under the tree.

Suspiciously cheap “compatible” heads. When City of London Police seized 3,000 counterfeit toothbrush heads in 2023, they warned that fakes are often made in unsanitary conditions from substandard materials and can detach and become a choking hazard. Give the genuine four-pack instead.

Delivery, returns and warranty

All UK orders go by Royal Mail Tracked 24. Delivery is £4.99, or free on orders from £50, and orders placed before 4pm are dispatched the same day. Unopened, unused products can be returned within 30 days of delivery; for hygiene reasons, opened or used products cannot be returned unless faulty, so keep the box sealed until you are sure. Full details are on our delivery and returns page.

Oral-B's standard warranty on the iO9 is two years from the date of purchase, on top of your statutory rights, so keep the order confirmation somewhere safe.

Christmas ordering: we will add last order dates for Christmas delivery here nearer the time. Last updated: 30 September 2026.
